What happened

Norris controlled the opening phase of the first race at the new Madring street circuit. On Lap 15, Lance Stroll crashed at Turn 20 and the Virtual Safety Car appeared just after Norris had passed the pit entry, so he couldn't stop under it. When he did pit, a slow front-right tire change cost him more time.

Kimi Antonelli, who had struggled for grip for much of the race, came through to win and pulled away from Max Verstappen in the closing laps. Lewis Hamilton lost places with brake problems and retired, after an earlier incident in which Red Bull told Verstappen to give a position back to him.

Why it matters

Eighty-one points clear

With Russell fifth, Antonelli's lead reached 81 points with nine rounds left.

Hamilton's title hopes fade

A retirement left him 101 points behind the leader.

Heat was a factor

Track temperatures of 53°C made tire wear a constant worry, and Charles Leclerc's long one-stop run took him to fourth.
